Lately, we have found ourselves asking, would Christmas dinner really be Christmas dinner without the presence of colourful Christmas crackers and the ridiculous paper hats that they contain?

We don’t think so. But, most of us are happy to admit that Christmas crackers are usually full of terrible gifts that no one wants. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way this year.

The Christmas Cracker Tradition

Before we delve into it, we feel like we should share a little bit about the tradition of Christmas crackers here in the United Kingdom. Christmas crackers have been a staple here for more than a century, with a London sweet maker called Tom Smith apparently fusing the French ‘bon bon’ sweets and their mottos that he saw in Paris with the sparks and cracks that came from his fire.

Later, one of his three sons introduced the hats that we can all recognise to the crackers and a number of themed crackers were released. The gifts in each were unique, with crackers being made for bachelors and spinsters, Suffragettes and war heroes. They also marked special occasions.

 
Since then, crackers have evolved into the colourful crackers that we know and love today. Little cardboard tubes that we pull with our loved ones to see who will “win” when the bang occurs. Each cracker usually contains a gift and a festive joke, but the gifts can be a little bit questionable, to say the least.
